Asian handicap gives one football team a goal adjustment before a selection is settled. A minus line asks that side to win by a bigger margin; a plus line gives it a start.

Quarter-goal lines split the stake into two neighbouring bets, which is why part of a wager can win, lose or be returned.

Reading plus and minus Asian lines

A +0.5 handicap adds half a goal to your chosen side for settlement. It wins if that side wins or draws the match. A -0.5 handicap subtracts half a goal and therefore needs your side to win.

Betfair describes a handicap as a virtual head start or deficit applied to the final score.

Whole-goal lines add a refund possibility. If you take Team A -1.0 and Team A wins 2–1, subtracting one goal produces a level adjusted score. Under Betfair rules, the stake is returned on that whole-line push. A 3–1 win clears -1.0, while a draw loses it.

What a home-team selection needs
Line Home win by one Draw
Home -0.5 Win Loss
Home -1.0 Stake back Loss
Home +0.5 Win Win

The adjusted score is a settlement device. It does not change the score in the competition table. Check which team carries the plus or minus sign before reading the table; moving the same line to the other side reverses the position.

How a quarter-goal stake is split

A -0.25 selection splits the stake equally between 0 and -0.5. On a draw, the 0 half is returned and the -0.5 half loses.

A +0.25 selection splits between 0 and +0.5; on a draw, the 0 half is returned and the +0.5 half wins. Betfair confirms this two-line settlement.

For an instructional ₦2,000 stake at decimal odds of 2.00 on Team A +0.25, half sits on 0 and half on +0.5. If the match is drawn, the 0 portion returns its half-stake.

The +0.5 portion returns ₦2,000 including its stake. Total returned is ₦3,000, giving profit equal to half the initial stake.

The mirror case is Team A -0.25 on a draw. Half the stake returns from 0; the -0.5 half loses. With ₦2,000 staked, you receive half the stake back and lose the other half. That is a half loss, not a full void.

What does -0.75 need?

A -0.75 handicap is half a stake on -0.5 and half on -1.0. If the chosen team wins by exactly one, the -0.5 half wins and the -1.0 half is returned. A win by two or more wins both halves. A draw or defeat loses both halves.

Use an instructional ₦2,000 stake at 1.80. A one-goal win makes the -0.5 half return ₦1,800, while the -1.0 half is refunded. Total return is ₦2,800, so profit is ₦800. A two-goal win returns ₦3,600.

The different payouts arise from the split, not a separate price on each half.

For +0.75, the split is +0.5 and +1.0. If your side loses by one, +0.5 loses and +1.0 returns its half stake. If the match is drawn or your team wins, both halves win. Quarter lines are easiest to read after writing out the two underlying lines.

Period and live handicap checks

Bet9ja gives full-match and half-specific Asian handicap rules separately. A first-half line settles on the interval score, while a normal full-time line uses the result after 90 minutes and added time.

In a live market, operators can define the handicap relative to the score when the bet is placed; Pinnacle says its live Asian handicap covers play after placement.

For broader bookmaker context, see betting sites in Nigeria. For the handicap itself, read the named team, sign, number and period together. A quarter line ending in .25 or .75 means two half-stakes; a whole line can return the full stake when the adjusted score is level.
